TOM HARKIN AT A GLANCE

CURRENT:
U.S. Senator from Iowa, elected in 1984 and re-elected in 1990.
Announced candidacy Sept.15, 1991; withdrew Mar. 9, 1992.

CAREER:
· In 1990 re-election, defeated U.S. Rep. Tom Tauke (R) by 54.47% to 45.42%.
· In 1984, defeated incumbent U.S. Sen. Roger Jepsen (R) by 55.46% to 43.66%.
· In a 1974 rematch, Harkin was elected to Congress representing Iowa's 5th CD.  Re-elected in 1976, '78, '80 and '82.
· In 1972, just out of law school, Harkin made an unsuccessful run for Congress, losing to incumbent U.S. Rep. William Scherle (R).
· In 1969, as a young congressional staff member, Harkin exposed the South Vietnamese government's use of "tiger cages" to imprison political prisoners.

MILITARY:
Served in the U.S. Navy as a jet pilot, 1962-1967.

EDUCATION:
B.A. in government and economics from Iowa State University (1962).  J.D. from Catholic University (1972).

FAMILY:

Married Ruth Raduenz in 1968, two daughters.

AGE:
53 years, 2 months old on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 1993.
Born Nov. 19, 1939 in Cumming, Iowa, son of a coal miner and a Slovenian immigrant.
