· Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978, defeating incumbent Sen. Edward Brooke (R), and served one term; diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1983 and announced in 1984 that he would not seek re-election.
· Elected to Congress in 1974 defeating incumbent Rep. Paul Cronin (R), and re-elected in 1976.
· Middlesex County Commissioner, 1973-74.
· Elected to Lowell City Council in 1969, served to 1972.  Also served as deputy assistant attorney general of Massachusetts, 1969-70.
· Peace Corps country director in the West Indies, 1967-68.
· Aide to U.S. Rep. F. Bradford Morse.
· Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia, 1962-64.

A.B. in economics from Dartmouth College (1962).  L.L.B. from Yale Law School (1967). M.P.P. from Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1973-74).

Married Niki Sauvage in 1967, three daughters.
