BOB KERREY AT A GLANCE

CURRENT:
U.S. Senator from Nebraska, elected in 1988.
Announced candidacy Sept. 30, 1991; withdrew Mar. 5, 1992.

CAREER:
· In his election to the Senate in 1988, Kerrey defeated appointed Sen. David Karnes (R) by 55% to 45%.
· Elected Governor of Nebraska in 1982, defeating incumbent Gov. Charles Thone (R) by 50.64% to 49.32%. Kerrey served one term, 1983-87, and did not seek re-election.
· Established a restaurant business with his brother-in-law in 1972 and built it into a multi-million dollar enterprise.

MILITARY:
Served in the U.S. Navy, 1966-69, commissioned as a lieutenant in the SEALs.  In March 1969 he was wounded during action in Vietnam, losing part of one leg; he was later awarded the Medal of Honor.

EDUCATION:
B.S. in pharmacy from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1966.

FAMILY:

Married Beverly Defnall in 1974; divorced in 1978; two children.

AGE:
49 years, 4.8 months old on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 1993.
Born Aug. 27, 1943 in Lincoln, NE, third of seven children; his father was a businessman.
